Based on the bachelor's degree, the master's program immerses students in current research questions through individual specialization. The institute's exceptional research focuses are evident in the diverse lectures offered through two distinct yet overlapping profiles: Structures in Mathematics with a Physics Background and Mathematical Modeling and Data Analysis. These profiles complement each other, ensuring a consistent, reliable, and research-oriented curriculum at the institute. Within these profiles, you can specialize in areas such as algebra and number theory, analysis, applied mathematics, discrete mathematics, geometry, geometric analysis, mathematical modeling and systems biology, mathematical physics, numerical mathematics, partial differential equations, statistics, probability theory, applied geometry and topology, data assimilation, graph theory, quantification of uncertainty, and machine learning. The close ties to non-university research institutions on campus further enrich these offerings. Flexibility is a key feature, allowing you to combine courses from both profiles or replace them with other courses. Additionally, you can gain knowledge in an extra subject like physics, computer science, life sciences (bioinformatics or animal physiology), cognitive sciences, chemistry, geosciences, economics, or business administration, which can be beneficial for your future career. Report card for the 10th grade of a German school, secondary school leaving certificate (Mittelschulabschluss) or specialized secondary school leaving certificate (Fachoberschulreife) Certificate of the higher education entrance qualification from an international school with proof that you have taken English as a foreign language and confirmation of level B1 Degree certificate for the completion of an English-language degree program at a recognized institution of higher education UNIcert® I TOEFL® Internet-Based Test (iBT): at least 57 points TOEIC®: at least 380 points B1 Preliminary (Cambridge English): at least 140 points IELTS: at least 4.0 points in every test component College English Test (CET; China): Band-4, at least 450 points
Qualification Requirements
Applying for a master’s degree generally requires you to hold an undergraduate degree, such as a bachelor’s degree. Preferably, you should have obtained this first degree in mathematics. Physics is also an accepted default. You may apply for our program also with a university degree in another scientific discipline if you can document knowledge in mathematics (worth at least 70 credit points) in modules that are exclusively or predominantly mathematically oriented.
