Specializing in forestry and related ecological and practical disciplines, the University of Applied Forest Sciences Rottenburg (HFR), or Hochschule für Forstwirtschaft in Rottenburg, is located in Rottenburg am Neckar, in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg – one of Germany's most heavily forested regions.
Largely based around practical learning, the school focuses on finding sustainable forest solutions, with projects ranging from creating energy from wood to watershed management systems.
HFR is one of the oldest specialized forestry learning centers in Germany, having been founded in 1954, and it and leads the way where sustainable forest management and renewables are concerned. The school serves roughly 1,100 students, so it isn't huge, but it does offer a range of courses in its main field, with a mix of eight MSc and BSc options for students to choose from.

The University of Applied Forest Sciences Rottenburg (HFR) won the 2008 "Studying in the Field of Sustainability" award, presented by the Heinz Nixdorf Foundation and the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft. A leader in sustainable forestry, it offers BSc and MSc courses in Forest Management, Renewable Energy, Water Resource Management, and Resource-Efficient Building.
HFR also works with companies within Germany, which cooperate with the school's professors to deliver practice-based courses at its 2.6 hectare arboretum or 5,000 square meter teaching pond for fishing research. The university encourages students to explore the nearby forest, while the thriving university city of Tübingen is a short journey away. The school welcomes foreign students, with most courses having an international dimension, and it offers chances to study both in Germany and abroad.
Internationals studying for more than one year in the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg will have to pay a €1,500 tuition fee per semester.

TK - Your health insurance partner
Take care of your studies - we take care of the bureaucracy!
TK is one of Germany’s leading public health insurance providers3. As a health insurance partner for Witten/Herdecke University, many students choose to be covered by TK during their studies. Health insurance is mandatory by law for all residents in Germany, including international students.
You will need to have your public healthcare cover organized before applying for your visa. At Expatrio, we partner with TK to help register international students for public healthcare cover, ensuring they can apply for their visa and are legally covered during their studies.
Students aged under 30 are entitled to a discounted student rate for health insurance. This is available at Expatrio through TK. Although TK offers the same basic cover as most public providers, it also offers English language support and registration as well as vaccination advice, dental hygiene cover, and well-being classes.
