Many students undertaking a German language course in Germany will need a specific Student Language Course Visa. This visa is necessary for non-EU citizens undertaking an intensive three-month to one-year language course.

As with all German visas, there are certain requirements for a successful application, so it’s advisable to familiarize yourself with these and with the process itself.

German Language Course Visa

There are three types of student visa in Germany; a Student Applicant Visa, a Language Course Visa, and standard Student Visa. This page specifically explores the Language Course Visa.

Those from the EU, EEA, and Switzerland can study in Germany on an intensive language course without the need for a visa. But those from other countries will need the necessary visa before they begin the course.

This visa is specific to German language courses, sometimes called ‘preparatory courses.’ You cannot study for a degree using the language course visa. The visa can also not be converted into a student visa upon completion of the language course. Those looking to apply for a university degree course after the language course will need to return home and apply separately for both the university course and the German Student Visa.

Those who have already been accepted onto a degree course but are required to undertake the language course first can apply for both the Student Visa and the Language Course Visa before they move to Germany.

How do I get a German language visa?

If you plan to attend a preparatory language course in Germany before starting your studies, you will need to apply for a Language Course Visa. Like all German visas, you must apply from your home country through the German consulate or the new Consular Services Portal.

New Online Visa Application System

As of January 2025, the German government has introduced a more streamlined way to apply for a visa through the Consular Services Portal. This portal allows you to submit your application online if you are attending a language course as a prerequisite for university admission.

However, the Consular Services Portal is not yet active in all countries. Be sure to check whether the system is available in your location here. If not, you will need to book an appointment and apply in person at your nearest German embassy or consulate.

Visa Fee and Interview

The Language Course Visa fee is €75. To complete your application, you must attend an in-person visa interview before your application can be accepted. Make sure you have all the necessary documentation prepared (see below for details).

Can I work in Germany with a language course visa?

From March 2024, if you’re an international student in Germany, you can work 140 full days or 280 half days per year. You can also take a part-time job during the semester, working up to 20 hours a week.

Requirements for language course visa

Checklist for a Language Visa application:

  1. Completed Visa Application Form

If you’re applying online via the Consular Services Portal, you’ll find this form during the application process. If you have an in-person appointment at the embassy, you can download the form, fill it out, and bring it with you.

  2. Valid Passport

Your passport must be less than 10 years old and valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure from Germany.

  3. Copy of Your Passport’s Biometric Page

Usually found at the beginning of your passport, this page contains your personal information and photo.

  4. Biometric Passport Photos

These should meet official standards (e.g., neutral expression, light background, correct size) and be taken recently.

  5. Proof of Language Course Admission

A formal admission letter from your language course institude.

  6. Proof of Financial Resources (Finanzierungsnachweis)

    This can include:

    • Blocked account confirmation showing the required amount per year (currently €11,904 for 2025).

If you are not using a blocked account, you may instead provide:

    • Scholarship confirmation
    • Declaration of commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung) from a sponsor in Germany
    • Proof of parental income or savings

  7. Travel Health Insurance

Coverage for at least your first 3 months in Germany is required. After arriving, you’ll need to register with a German health insurance provider.

  8. Academic Records and Certificates

Include transcripts, diplomas, and any other relevant academic documents.

  9. Curriculum Vitae (CV)

Make sure it’s up-to-date with your academic and professional background.

  10. Motivation Letter

Explain your reasons for studying in Germany, why you chose your university, and your future plans.

  11. Proof of Previous Study or Employment (if applicable)

You may need to show your academic or professional history.

  12. Copies of All Documents

Bring both the originals and photocopies of each required document.

  13. Visa Appointment Confirmation

A printout of your appointment confirmation, if applicable.

Health Insurance for Language Course Students

Foreign (Non-EU/EEA/Swiss) students undertaking a Language Course of between three months and one year will need to apply for a specialist Language Course Student Visa. This visa also requires proof of healthcare insurance; however, language course students are not able to register for the public healthcare system.

This means you will need to take out private health insurance for the duration of your course. Without proof of this, you cannot apply for your visa.

Once you have registered with a private healthcare insurer, you’ll need to take proof of this cover with you to your visa interview.

How to Secure Your German Student Visa

Start your move to Germany!

  • Live Q&A session

Application Process

1. Complete the Online Application

Use the Consular Services Portal to fill out your application form online. Make sure all fields are completed to avoid delays. If the portal is not available in your country, download the form from the German consulate website and fill it out by hand.

2. Book Your Visa Interview

Schedule your visa interview through the portal or directly with the German embassy or consulate in your home country. Appointment wait times can be long, so book as early as possible.

4. Set up a Blocked Account (or other proof of financial means)

To apply for a language course visa, you must prove that you have enough funds to support yourself during your stay in Germany. This includes covering your living expenses such as accommodation, food, health insurance, and daily needs.

The German government currently requires proof of €992 per month, totaling €11,904 for a full year. The amount you need to show depends on the length of your language course. For example, if your course is 6 months long, you’ll need to prove you have €5,952 (€992 × 6).

One of the most common ways to show this is by setting up a Blocked Account — a special type of bank account where the required amount is deposited and partially released each month after you arrive in Germany.

You may also provide alternative proof, such as a formal sponsorship letter from a parent or relative.

At Expatrio, we help language course applicants open a Blocked Account that meets all visa requirements, giving you a better chance of getting approved.

5. Health Insurance

Those on a language course are not eligible to register for the public healthcare system and will therefore need to arrange private medical/healthcare cover for the duration of the course.

Find out more on our Health Insurance for Foreign Students pages about public and private German health insurance for students.

6. Gather all the required documents

Ahead of your interview, ensure you have all the documents outlined above and that everything is in order. You will need to take these documents to your visa interview.

7. Attending the visa interview

This short interview will take around ten minutes and will take place at the German consulate, visa office, or embassy in your home country. You may be asked questions about your motivation for doing a language course in Germany.

Recognized Certification for your language studies

Undertaking a formal German language course in Germany for foreigners will result in a recognized certification. A language course may be undertaken at a German university or a dedicated language school. After successfully completing an intensive language course, students will be awarded a grade based on the following grading system: A1, A2 (A2.1, A2.2), B1 (B1.1, B1.2), B2, C1, C2.

In order to progress to a German-taught degree, you will need to gain a score of at least B1.
