The Business Day of the 17th Ambassadors Conference took place in Berlin last Tuesday, August 27, 2019. Foreign Minister Heiko Maas opened the event together with the European Commissioner for Competition, Margrethe Vestager. Throughout the day, numerous country committees, forums and business cafés have offered insights into the practice of German diplomacy. In the various meetings, participants discussed, among other things, the handling of global trade tensions, Brexit, the industrial policy sovereignty of Germany and Europe, the role of human rights, sustainability and climate protection, energy cooperation as well as digitization and the future of labor.
This year's Business Day motto was "Shaping Multilateralism - the Economy as a Partner in Europe and the World". There was also considerable interest in the topics of educational cooperation, promoting learning of the German language and, in particular, the fact of securing skilled workers. This year Expatrio was represented for the first time at this top-level conference. "The personal dialogue with the German ambassadors provides new insights into the situations in other countries. This understanding of global developments is essential for our work in supporting and securing immigration of highly qualified and skilled workers, especially from third countries," explains Urs Unkauf, Director of Public Affairs at Expatrio.
Numerous heads of German missions abroad showed great interest in the topics, services and experiences of Expatrio. The focus was not only on practical aspects such as the advantages of a digital blocked account for foreign students and the proven cooperation between Expatrio and the German Federal Foreign Office. Expatrio's vision of making its own contribution to a positive image of Germany abroad by fostering transparency and reducing the administrative effort required for highly-qualified people to enter Germany also inspired many experienced diplomats.
The Business Day is the most important meeting of the year regarding foreign policy and business. More than 1,000 representatives from large companies, small and medium-sized businesses, start-ups and associations exchange views with the approximately 230 heads of German missions abroad. They will discuss economic and political developments and future opportunities on foreign markets. "For Expatrio, the presence at the Business Day was a complete success and we would like to build on this - both in the practical cooperation with the German missions abroad and the German Federal Foreign Office - on the upcoming Business Days," Urs Unkauf concludes.
