Computational Linguistics
Subjects: Linguistics;Language
B.Sc. | Bachelor of Science
Course description
Computational linguistics is more than just an engineering discipline. It delves into the mathematical properties of both natural and artificial languages. The main goal is to develop formalisms that represent linguistic facts in a way that computers can process. A bachelor's degree in this field equips students with essential knowledge in linguistics and computational linguistics. Students learn the basics of syntax, semantics, and morphology, along with crucial mathematical, logical, and computer science principles. The curriculum includes studying grammars, lexicons, and text structures, as well as analyzing text corpora and statistical methods. This leads to a deeper understanding of the subject. Courses also bridge theoretical computer science with language processing methods. Programming language training is a significant part of the curriculum. Computational linguistics is inherently interdisciplinary. It involves not only computer science and linguistics but also psychology, philosophy, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science. At the University of Potsdam, the program combines theoretical linguistics with practical computational linguistics and artificial intelligence. In the first semester, students start implementing basic concepts on the computer using the logical specification language PROLOG. The program also touches on related fields like psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, patholinguistics, and psychology.
