Course description

The Dependency and Slavery Studies program is an international and interdisciplinary master’s degree designed for four semesters. Taught entirely in English, it targets students interested in history, material sciences, and social sciences. The program is built on the innovative research concept of “strong asymmetrical dependency,” offering fresh perspectives on slavery and other forms of dependency through an interdisciplinary lens. Students delve into deeply rooted social dependencies like slavery, serfdom, and debt bondage across various epochs, geographies, and cultures. The focus is on historical origins in Asian, American, African, and European societies, rather than the modern world. The program aims to move beyond the simple binary of “slavery versus freedom.” Additionally, the degree provides insights into contemporary forms of extreme asymmetrical dependency, exploring these issues in today's context. Students learn to frame research questions across disciplines and solve complex problems independently, enhancing their methodological and analytical skills. Transcultural comparison is a key aspect of studying slavery and other dependencies. This program fosters an environment of trust, understanding, and inclusivity. It emphasizes clear, concise communication, avoiding confusing language. The goal is to achieve the highest level of topical authority, ensuring students are well-prepared to tackle these complex subjects.
