This postgraduate course is one of the few in Europe that zeroes in on the pressing political and economic issues in East Asia, specifically China, Japan, and Korea. You can focus on the Foreign & Security Policy of East Asia, exploring how these nations navigate international relations and defense strategies. Another option is to study the Governments and Institutions of East Asia, gaining insights into their political structures and administrative frameworks. For those interested in the cultural aspect, the Political Culture and History of East Asia track examines the region's rich historical context and its influence on contemporary politics. The course also covers Regionalisation and Internationalisation, looking at how East Asian countries interact within the global arena. If economics is your area of interest, you can specialize in East Asia and Global Economic Governance, understanding how these economies integrate and influence global markets. Lastly, the Political Economics of East Asia track offers a deep dive into the economic policies and practices that shape the region. This program is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of East Asia's political and economic landscape, equipping you with the knowledge to navigate and address the region's current challenges.

Application Requirements

Language Requirements

For the Master's programme in Languages and Cultures of East Asia, very good knowledge of English is strongly recommended, especially in the area of reading skills at level C1 of the CEFR.

Qualification Requirements

For the Master's programme, in accordance with the Bachelor's programme, knowledge of two East Asian foreign languages (Chinese, Japanese and/or Korean, 40 CP each) is mandatory. The required language competencies roughly correspond to levels B2 (for oral competencies), B1 (for written text production) or B2 with portions of C1 for reading competencies (for reading comprehension of non-fiction and specialized texts) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Applicants must also demonstrate knowledge of pre-modern language levels as well as one semester of study abroad in an East Asian sub-region amounting to 30 CP.
