Course description
The course is structured around three main types of modules. First, the regional studies modules focus on seminars that delve into the politics and society of Greater China, Japan, and Korea. Second, the social science modules offer lectures and seminars that equip students with analytical tools to understand these regions. Third, the technical language modules aim to enhance proficiency in the technical language of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, both in spoken and written forms. This program provides a thorough understanding of political and social developments in Japan, Korea, and Greater China. It explores intra-societal and intra-regional conflicts, analyzes trends in regionalization and integration in East Asia, and offers systematic training in handling sources in Japanese, Korean, or Chinese. Additionally, it teaches translation techniques and includes language courses to deepen linguistic skills. By engaging with these modules, students gain a comprehensive overview of East Asian dynamics, preparing them to navigate and analyze the complexities of this vital region.

Good knowledge of modern Chinese or Japanese or Korean is a prerequisite. Good knowledge of English is also expected, as a large part of the specialist literature is written in this language and because courses and examinations can take place in English.
Qualification Requirements
To study, you need a general university entrance qualification (Abitur), a bachelor's degree in Chinese studies or Japanese studies or Korean studies with a social science minor, or a bachelor's degree in a social science subject (see Foreign language requirements below).
