Course description
In light of recent studies on climate change from the WMO and IPCC, we face significant challenges in meeting climate goals and halting global warming. The 2019 Production Gap Report offers little optimism. Consequently, the European Parliament has declared a climate emergency and aims to take decisive action to become the first continent to achieve the Paris climate goals. This involves implementing new legal and regulatory requirements to enhance sustainability management and reporting on climate risks, including ESG risks, for listed companies, banks, insurance firms, and investment companies. Countries are increasingly adopting CO2 taxes to speed up economic transformation. The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS), a supranational body, has established a task force for climate-related financial information (TFCD) and introduced a Green Fund for sustainable investment of national central banks' excess reserves. The European Central Bank (ECB) emphasizes that climate risks are a major challenge for both the real and financial sectors. Therefore, all companies and financial intermediaries must integrate climate risks into their risk management strategies. The European Union views the shift towards sustainable finance as crucial for implementing the Paris climate goals. According to ECB President Lagarde, an annual investment of €180 billion is required to transform the economy in a climate
