Course description

At the University of Regensburg, British Studies covers the full spectrum of literatures and cultures from the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the broader English-speaking world, excluding North America. This spans from the Middle Ages to the present day. The program examines textual, visual, material, performative, and virtual representations and interpretations of these cultures. It employs methods from literary and cultural studies, linguistics, media studies, and gender studies. In the context of the British Empire's history and globalization, postcolonial texts, theoretical approaches, and intercultural issues are particularly significant. The goal of English teaching and research here is to foster a historically informed, culturally nuanced, and scientifically reflective understanding of the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the English-speaking world. Current focal points in Regensburg's English studies include: - Literature and Culture of the United Kingdom in the 19th and 20th Centuries - Contemporary British Culture and Media - Gender Studies - Early Modern Studies - Science and Literature Studies - Postcolonial Studies This comprehensive approach ensures a deep and varied exploration of English literature and culture, aiming to provide students with a rich, well-rounded education.
