Course description
American Studies at the University of Regensburg dives deep into the rich tapestry of North American literatures and cultures. This program explores the multi-ethnic and multilingual diversity from the colonial era to today. It’s an interdisciplinary field, blending literary and cultural studies, linguistics, history, political science, cultural geography, visual culture studies, and material culture studies. The curriculum covers a wide range of representations and interpretations of 'America'—textual, visual, material, performative, and virtual. With the growing internationalization of American Studies, transnational approaches and intercultural-comparative questions are gaining prominence. The goal is to foster a historically informed, culturally nuanced, and scientifically reflective understanding of America. Key areas of focus in Regensburg include American cultures of remembrance, early American studies, American drama and theater, German-American relations, American visual cultures, and environmental studies. The program also delves into the theory and practice of American studies. Students can choose American Studies as a BA subject, a second major, or a minor.
