Course description

The master's degree program "History and Culture of the Baltic Sea Region" is a dynamic, interdisciplinary, and international course of study. It focuses on a region known for its intricate historical, cultural, and linguistic landscapes, as well as its stability and prosperity. Students delve into the diverse cultures, histories, languages, and literatures of the Baltic Sea region, covering Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Russian, Polish, Low German, and German. The program emphasizes the relationships between these countries, cultures, and languages. It is integrated into the university's research focus on "Cultures of the Baltic Sea Region" and is linked to the Interdisciplinary Center for Baltic Sea Research (IFZO) within the Faculty of Humanities. The curriculum provides a solid interdisciplinary foundation through compulsory courses, while offering significant flexibility in elective areas, language practice, and a semester abroad. This flexibility allows students to tailor their studies to their interests. The semester abroad is a distinct module and a core component of the program. Numerous international partnerships with participating institutes provide a wide array of opportunities for students to customize their stay and specialize their studies.
