Course description

Applied Linguistics is a multifaceted field that addresses language and communication issues in various societal contexts, including media, organizations, business, and politics. This M.A. program equips students with the skills to identify and solve these problems using linguistic theories and empirical methods. The curriculum fosters an understanding of intercultural communication, second language acquisition, language processing, and translation studies. Students delve into topics such as interpersonal communication, regional and social language variations, (im)politeness across cultures, pragmatic competence, writing in a second language, and cognitive processes in translating. The program offers a comprehensive overview of Applied Linguistics, allowing students to specialize in numerous subdisciplines. Core modules include intercultural communication, second language acquisition, language processing, and translation studies. Additionally, the program provides teaching and research supervision in areas like pragmatics, discourse analysis, genre analysis, sociolinguistics, dialectology, cognitive linguistics, psycholinguistics, and metalexicography. This approach ensures students gain a robust theoretical foundation and practical skills, preparing them to address real-world language and communication challenges effectively.
