Course description

In this two-year MA programme, students will gain deep expertise in modern East Asia, exploring its historical roots and tackling the economic, legal, political, and social challenges of this vibrant region. They will enhance their language skills, with the programme taught in English and offering beginner or advanced classes in Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, or Korean. Throughout the course, students will refine their methodological and theoretical abilities by attending lectures and choosing electives in core disciplines such as history, law, management, and political sciences. This programme, known as MEAS, is affiliated with Goethe University's Interdisciplinary Centre for East Asian Studies (IZO). It is a collaborative effort involving four university faculties: Economics and Business, Law, Linguistics, Cultures and Arts, and Social Sciences.

Qualification Requirements

A Bachelor’s Degree in social sciences, political science, economics, business administration, law, history, anthropology or related areas, or a Bachelor’s Degree in cultural studies with focus on China, Japan, Korea or South East Asia. English proficiency (level C1) proven by: - TOEFL test result of at least 95 (internet based), - IELTS 7,0 - TOEIC 945 - or an equivalent certificate. Comprehensive academic CV (in English) A convincing motivation letter (a formal letter addressed to the academic director of the MEAS programme with a length of 500 to 600 words in English), naming at least one university professor as a reference. Research proposal (800-2.000 words, excluding bibliography) on a topic related to the regions and disciplines covered by the MEAS program (in English)
