Religion in the Public Sphere
Subjects: Religion in the Public Sphere;Religion
M.A. | Master of Arts
Course description
This master’s programme delves into the ongoing debate about “religion” in various public spheres. Initially, the focus is on Europe, with later comparisons on an international scale. The programme examines the discourse on “religion” (such as exemptions for “religion” in social contexts) and discussions on specific religions (like Christianity as “cultural heritage,” Islam as a “challenge,” and Buddhism as a “modern philosophy of life”). This M.A. in Religion in the Public Sphere stands apart from traditional Religious Studies programmes, which usually concentrate on religious practices within communities. Students will be equipped to navigate professional environments that engage with these multicultural and democratic processes. They will learn to analyze different conflict scenarios, address them confidently and constructively, and develop sustainable, solution-oriented strategies. The degree is offered by the Institute for the Study of Religion in collaboration with the Institute of Sociology. A unique aspect of this programme is the option to earn a double degree, thanks to partnerships with Södertörn University in Sweden and Roma Tre University in Italy. This opportunity enriches the academic experience and broadens professional horizons.
