Course description

The Master's program provides a deep and thoughtful understanding of modern linguistic theories and methods. It allows students to develop a scientific profile in areas such as text and discourse processing, typology and fieldwork, language change, and sign language research. Students gain skills in conducting independent research and working across disciplines.

Language requirements Unless native speakers of English, applicants must provide proof of proficiency in English at the level of: a) UNIcert® III; b) NULTE C1; c) Cambridge English Scale 180 points; d) IELTS Academic 6.5; e) TOEFL iBT 93 points; f) Global Scale of English (Pearson Academic) 76 points; g) C1 or higher according to GeR; or the completion of a program of studies that has English skills (at least level GeR-C1) as accredited target. These applicants do not need to supply a certificate of proficiency in German. Applicants with very good knowledge of German (or previous studies in a German university) must provide proof of proficiency in English at the level of a) UNIcert® II; b) NULTE B2; c) Cambridge English Scale 160 points; d) IELTS Academic 5.5; e) TOEFL iBT 59 points; f) Global Scale of English (Pearson Academic) 59 points; g) B2 or higher according to GeR; or a stay of one year (for study or professional purposes) in an English speaking country.

Qualification Requirements

Previous Education B.A. degree or equivalent at least 150 ECTS at the time of application Eligibility: For Single (78 C) and Joint Honours MA (42): Evidence must be submitted of credits in general linguistics, linguistics or a specific philology to the extent of at least 60 C, including a total of at least 36 C from the areas of syntax, phonology, morphology, semantics and/or empirical linguistics (psycholinguistics, corpus-based data acquisition and/or academic language courses, the latter with a maximum of 12 credits). For module package (36C/18C): Evidence must be submitted of at least two modules or part-modules from the core areas of theoretical linguistics (Phonetics/Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics, Pragmatics).
