Course description

The Archaeology of the Ancient World (AAW) is a comprehensive two-year, full-time Master’s program conducted in English. This program integrates three key disciplines: Prehistoric Archaeology, Near Eastern Archaeology, and Classical Archaeology. It delves into the rich past of the Mediterranean region, Eurasia, and southwest Asia. As a consecutive program, AAW builds on the foundational knowledge gained from a Bachelor’s degree in ancient material culture or through relevant professional experience. AAW offers a deep dive into a region marked by significant transformations and extensive intercultural interactions over the past ten thousand years. You will develop both theoretical and practical skills. Theoretical skills include engaging with scholarly debates, while practical skills involve handling artifacts and analyzing data. Why study the ancient world? The past serves as a vast archive of human experiences. Archaeology allows us to explore these experiences from various perspectives. For instance, how did ancient people adapt to environmental changes? How did artistic choices reflect intercultural exchanges? How can soil samples or remote sensing technologies help us reconstruct ancient worlds? How can we understand immaterial aspects of the past through material culture? These inquiries help us think long-term and gain a deeper understanding of past cultures. In this program,
