How to Apply and Get Admission to a German University

October 22nd, 2024

  • Step-by-step guide to applying
  • Exclusive access to online community of students

Admission Requirements for International Students at RWTH Aachen University

The first step to applying as an international student is to submit your application through RWTHonline. There is no application fee, making it accessible to all students. The process varies slightly depending on whether you're applying for undergraduate or graduate programs.

  • Undergraduate programs: These usually require an Abitur (high school leaving certificate) or an equivalent high school qualification.
  • Graduate programs: For most RWTH Aachen University master’s programs in engineering, you will need a Bachelor’s degree, along with proof of language proficiency (either German or English, depending on the program). Some programs also require GRE scores. Other programs have specific requirements and master's students also apply directly through the university portal.

Semester Type Application Deadline
Bachelor’s (Winter)
July 15th (restricted) / October 15th (open)
Bachelor’s (Summer)
January 15th (restricted) / March 15th (open)
Master’s (Winter)
July 15th (typically) / August 1st (restricted)
Master’s (Summer)
January 15th (typically)

  • Restricted admissions refer to programs that have a limited number of available spots due to high demand. For these programs, applicants are ranked based on criteria such as GPA, entrance exams, or language proficiency. Only the top candidates are offered admission. If too many students apply, a Numerus Clausus (NC) may be used, which sets a minimum grade requirement for entry.
  • Open admissions mean that there is no cap on the number of students that can be accepted. As long as applicants meet the minimum eligibility requirements (like language proficiency or a relevant qualification), they are admitted. These programs are typically less competitive and do not apply selection criteria beyond meeting basic entry qualifications.

In both cases, international students must ensure they meet all requirements, but restricted programs are generally harder to get into due to the limited spaces.

General Language Requirements

For international students applying to RWTH Aachen University, demonstrating proficiency in either English or German is essential, depending on the language of instruction for your chosen program. The university offers many English-taught programs across various disciplines, especially at the master's level, but many programs are also conducted in German. Here’s a breakdown of the language requirements for both German-taught and English-taught programs:

Program Type Required Proficiency
English-Taught
TOEFL (min. 90), IELTS (min. 6.5)
German-Taught
TestDaF (min. 4), DSH-2, Goethe-Zertifikat C2

Some programs may waive these requirements if the applicant has completed their prior education in English-speaking countries or institutions where the medium of instruction was English. However, students should check the specific requirements for their chosen program, as there are exceptions and variations.

Language Exceptions

  • Some Master’s and PhD programs may have flexibility regarding language requirements. For example, certain research-intensive or specialized programs may allow coursework and research to be conducted entirely in English, even if the overall program is predominantly German-taught.
  • Additionally, some programs at the RWTH International Academy, the university’s platform for continuing education and executive programs, are offered completely in English, without the need for German proficiency.

Student Accommodation at RWTH Aachen University

Finding suitable accommodation is one of the key challenges for international students when moving to a new country, and RWTH Aachen University offers various options to help students settle into their new life. There are primarily two categories of accommodation for students: university dormitories and private housing. Each option has its own benefits, but competition for spots can be tough, so students are encouraged to start their housing search early.

University Dormitories

RWTH Aachen University, in collaboration with the Studierendenwerk Aachen, provides several dormitory options for students. These dormitories are relatively affordable and come with basic amenities, offering a convenient option for international students:

  • Cost: University dormitory prices range between €250 and €400 per month, depending on the location and type of accommodation (shared or single room, apartment, etc.).
  • Application Process: Students must apply for dormitories well in advance. The demand for dormitory spaces far exceeds availability, so applying as soon as possible is essential. The application is done online through the Studierendenwerk Aachen portal, and students are selected based on availability and waiting list priorities.
  • Amenities: Dormitories generally include furnished rooms, shared kitchens, laundry facilities, and internet access. These accommodations provide a community environment where students can socialize with peers and integrate into university life.

However, securing a spot in university housing can be competitive. Due to high demand, waiting times can be up to several months, particularly for international students arriving at the beginning of the semester.

Private Housing

For students unable to secure a spot in a dormitory, or those preferring more independence, private housing is another option. Aachen has a thriving private rental market, with options ranging from shared apartments (known as Wohngemeinschaften, or WG) to individual flats.

  • Shared Apartments (WG): A popular option among students, WGs offer a social living environment where students share common areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Rent for a room in a shared apartment typically ranges between €350 and €500 per month, depending on location and amenities. These shared apartments provide more flexibility in terms of lifestyle and location, making them attractive to many students.
  • Individual Apartments: For those seeking more privacy, renting a single apartment is also possible. However, this option is generally more expensive, with rent ranging from €500 to €800 per month. The cost can vary based on proximity to the university and the condition of the apartment.

When looking for private accommodation, popular websites like WG-Gesucht.de and ImmoScout24 can be used to find listings. It’s also common to find listings in student Facebook groups or university noticeboards.

Important Tip: Be wary of housing scams. Always verify the legitimacy of offers by visiting the apartment in person or conducting video tours and avoiding upfront payments before signing a contract.

Short-Term Accommodations

Many international students need temporary accommodation when they first arrive while searching for long-term housing. Several options for short-term stays include:

  • Student Hotels and Hostels: Aachen has student hotels and hostels that offer affordable short-term stays. Prices range between €25 and €50 per night.
  • Airbnb and Private Guesthouses: Another option is renting temporary housing via Airbnb or staying at a guesthouse. This provides a flexible option for students who need a place for just a few weeks before moving into long-term accommodation.

Tips for Securing Accommodation

  • Start Early: Begin your search for housing several months before your planned arrival in Aachen, especially if you plan to live in a dormitory.
  • Consider Short-Term Options: If you cannot find long-term accommodation immediately, consider short-term housing while continuing your search.
  • Budget Accordingly: Accommodation costs in Aachen are relatively affordable compared to major German cities like Berlin or Munich, but students should still budget carefully to cover housing, utilities, and other living expenses.

Living in Aachen

Aachen is a student-friendly city with a rich cultural and historical backdrop. The city's proximity to Belgium and the Netherlands adds an international flair, making it a convenient place for travel and cultural exchange. The public transport system is efficient, and students benefit from a semester ticket that grants them access to buses and trains within North Rhine-Westphalia, included in the semester fee.

Popular Areas for Student Housing

  • Pontviertel: Known as the student district, Pontviertel is close to the university and filled with cafes, bars, and affordable eateries, making it an ideal location for students.
  • Burtscheid: A bit farther from the university but quieter, Burtscheid is a preferred area for students who want a more peaceful atmosphere.
  • City Centre (Innenstadt): Living in the city center provides easy access to Aachen’s historical sites and shopping areas, though accommodation here can be more expensive.

Overall, while accommodation options at RWTH Aachen University are varied, students are encouraged to start their housing search early to secure the most suitable and affordable place to live.

ESN Aachen organizes cultural events, trips to nearby cities, and social gatherings, which are great opportunities to make friends and experience German culture firsthand.

These organizations and the numerous events they organize allow international students to connect with others, build friendships, and create a support system that helps them thrive academically and socially.

  • Intercultural Training Programs: The university regularly organizes workshops and seminars on intercultural communication, helping students develop the skills needed to interact in a globalized environment.
  • Language Tandems: Through the Language Tandem Program, students from different countries are paired to teach each other their native languages. This program is popular among international students looking to improve their German while helping German students practice other languages, like English or Spanish.

These exchange programs contribute to a richer student experience by allowing individuals from various backgrounds to learn from one another.

Additionally, the university’s Writing Center offers help with academic writing, particularly for students whose first language is not German or English.
  • Language Courses: RWTH Aachen provides German language courses at various levels, helping international students learn or improve their German proficiency. Learning German is highly recommended, even for those enrolled in English-taught programs, as it enhances the overall experience of living in Germany and helps with everyday interactions.
  • Visa and Immigration Assistance: The International Office also supports students with visa renewals, residency permits, and other legal requirements necessary for staying in Germany.

Orientation for International Students

RWTH Aachen goes to great lengths to ensure that international students feel welcome and integrated from the moment they arrive. The Welcome Weeks at the beginning of each semester are packed with orientation activities designed to help students transition smoothly into their new environment. These activities include:

  • Campus Tours: Guided tours of the various RWTH campuses help students familiarize themselves with the university's facilities, such as libraries, cafeterias, and lecture halls.
  • City Tours: Aachen is a historic city with many attractions. City tours organized by student groups help international students get acquainted with local landmarks, transportation systems, and essential services like grocery stores and banks.
  • Social Events: Welcome parties, international dinners, and cultural nights are organized to encourage students to socialize and build a strong support network early on.

These orientation programs are a vital part of helping international students acclimate to their new environment and feel part of the RWTH Aachen community.
