Kaiserslautern, located in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, sits in the southwest corner of Germany. The city is mid-sized and is best known for two things: first, its football team, 1. FC Kaiserslautern, who have won the Bundesliga four times, and second, for being the home of the largest American military community outside of the USA, with 45,000 NATO personnel living in and around the city.

It is known as a hub of modern information and communications technology and is home to two universities: the University of Kaiserslautern and the University of Applied Sciences, which were founded in 1970 and 1971, respectively

The University of Kaiserslautern, known in Germany as Technische Universität Kaiserslautern is a research university well-known for its research into software, artificial intelligence, and composite materials. It is a part of the 'Software Cluster', an award-winning group of German technical research universities. The university has around 15,000 students and 2,500 academic staff, giving it a high staff-to-student ratio. The University of Applied Sciences, with around 6,000 students, is known for its vocational teaching, with a focus on design and engineering.
The economy of Kaiserslautern is strong with a large selection of businesses from different industries. Businesses range in sectors from car parts, including the engine manufacturer Adam Opel AG and the car seat manufacturer Johnson Controls, to knowledge management software producers like Empolis.
