About the University

The Humboldt University in Berlin was founded in the summer of 1809 by the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III. founded as the University of Berlin (Latin Alma Mater Berolinensis) and began teaching in the fall of 1810. The largest and oldest university in Berlin has been named after the Prussian polymaths Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt since 1949. It has its headquarters in the Palace of Prince Heinrich at Unter den Linden 6 in the Mitte district. HU Berlin is one of the 20 largest universities in Germany and the most renowned universities in the world. On July 19, 2019, as part of the Excellence Strategy, it was included in the second funding line by the federal and state governments as an institution of the Berlin University Alliance (together with the Free University of Berlin, the Technical University of Berlin and the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin), after it had already been included in 2012 was named a “University of Excellence” as part of the Excellence Initiative.
