Founded as a clock-making school in 1850, HFU became a state engineering school in the mid-20th century before becoming a University of Applied Sciences in 1971. There are now 5,800 students at the university, studying across three campuses and nine faculties.
Today the university offers a wide range of engineering, computing, science, health, and business degrees. Furtwangen University also offers a number of courses that are taught in English including the International Business Management bachelor’s degree and a number of master's courses in engineering and business. All English-taught courses at HFU have a specifically international focus. Uniquely, the university also offers a women-only E-business degree course as well as a number of lectures in French. HFU’s commitment to internationalism means there’s a strong intercultural exchange and a higher than average number of both international and exchange students at the university. The institution proudly celebrates its heritage and is still home to the German Clock Museum.
