Situated in the city of Hagen in North-Rhine Westphalia, the FernUniversität in Hagen is one of Germany's pre-eminent distance learning institutions.
Unlike most other German universities, the FernUniversität operates a network of centers around Germany (and Europe), allowing it to award degrees to people far away from its headquarters. Offering Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral qualifications, it provides a wide variety of subjects, with a particular specialism in economics and business administration.

FernUniversität in Hagen was founded in 1974 to cater for German students who could not attend conventional universities. Nowadays, it teaches over 76,000 students, both in Germany and across Europe. Courses range from psychology to economics, and a mix of Bachelors, Masters, and PhD options are available – almost always with flexible schedules to suit working students.
The FernUniversität in Hagen was created to fill a major gap in the German higher education system. Inspired by Britain's Open University, it was set up to provide distance learning options with a practical, often business-oriented focus. Since then, it has expanded to include law and political studies, as well as history, sociology, and psychology, and it has produced numerous prominent political figures, along with plenty of lawyers, teachers, and academics.
The school teaches many modules in English and is well suited to accepting international students. It takes part in Erasmus exchanges, provides extensive language support, and generally makes foreign students feel part of the wider community.
