Student Housing Options at University of Tübengin

Finding suitable accommodation is a key concern for international students studying at Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, and the university offers several options to help students settle in. Tübingen provides a variety of housing choices, including university dormitories, private housing, and short-term accommodations.

University Dormitories (Student Residences)

The Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim manages the university dormitories. These dorms are affordable and located throughout the city, often close to the university's key campuses:

  • Cost: University dormitories range from €250 to €400 per month, depending on the size and location of the room.
  • Room Types: Dormitories typically offer single rooms with shared kitchens and bathrooms, but shared apartment-style units are also available. The rooms are furnished, and dorm life can provide a great opportunity to meet other students and engage in social activities.
  • Availability: While dorms are a budget-friendly option, they are in high demand, particularly at the beginning of each semester. International students are encouraged to apply early to secure a spot.

Private Apartments and Shared Flats (WGs)

For those who prefer to live off-campus or cannot secure a dormitory spot, private housing in Tübingen is a common choice. Most students opt for shared apartments, known as WG (Wohngemeinschaft), where they rent a room and share communal spaces like kitchens and bathrooms with other roommates.

  • Cost: The typical rent for a room in a shared apartment ranges from €300 to €600 per month, depending on the location and apartment size.
  • Locations: Popular areas for student housing include Südstadt, Derendingen, and Lustnau, which are well connected to the university by public transportation. Some students prefer to live conveniently closer to the university's Morgenstelle campus.
  • Finding WG: Students can find shared housing through online portals such as WG-Gesucht or by connecting with other students through university forums and social media groups.

Short-Term Accommodation

For students who need temporary housing while they search for long-term accommodations, several options are available:

  • Student hotels and youth hostels offer affordable rates for short stays. These can be particularly useful for international students arriving before the semester begins and looking for more permanent housing.
  • Airbnb is another option for students who prefer private short-term accommodation.

Additional Tips for Securing Accommodation

Given the competitive nature of the Tübingen housing market, here are some tips to improve your chances of finding accommodation:

  • Start early: Begin your search as soon as you receive your admission offer, especially for university dormitories. The earlier you apply, the better your chances of securing a spot.
  • Check university resources: Tübingen’s International Office and Studierendenwerk provide housing assistance and may be able to help international students find accommodation through university channels.
  • Beware of scams: Always verify the legitimacy of offers when looking for private housing online. Avoid sending money before seeing the property or signing a rental agreement.

Living Costs in Tübingen

The cost of living in Tübingen is generally moderate compared to other German university cities. In addition to rent, students should budget for:

  • Food: Approximately €150-€250 per month.
  • Transportation: Public transportation costs are affordable, and many students use bicycles to get around town.
