What is the DEGIS Buddy Program?

The DEGIS Buddy Program is a student-led initiative that pairs new international students with more experienced students, who can be either local or other international students. The program was launched in the winter semester of 2020/2021 with the goal of creating a supportive network for incoming students. By connecting you with a "buddy," DEGIS aims to help you quickly adjust to life in Germany, both academically and socially.

How the program works

When you join the DEGIS Buddy Program, you are matched with a buddy based on your needs, interests, and preferences. This personalized matching process ensures that you are paired with someone who can truly help you with the specific challenges you might face.

Once matched, your buddy becomes your go-to person for any questions or concerns you might have as you settle into your new environment. Whether you need help finding your way around campus, understanding local customs, or just want to chat about your experiences and have fun, your buddy is there to support you.

Benefits for newbies

For incoming international students (newbies), there are many benefits of the DEGIS Buddy Program. First and foremost, it gives you a sense of belonging and community from the moment you arrive. Your buddy can introduce you to other students, help you navigate the local area, and offer insights into German culture and traditions.

Additionally, your buddy can assist with practical aspects of student life, such as registering for courses, understanding university procedures, and even finding the best places to shop or hang-out. This kind of support can make a big difference in how quickly and comfortably you adapt to your new life in Germany.

A unique experience for veteran buddies

The program isn't just great for newbies to Germany—local (veteran) buddies also gain valuable experience. A veteran buddy is someone who has spent at least 6 months in Germany,  so you already know your way around campus, and you know what it feels like to be a newbie! During the program, you have the opportunity to develop important skills such as leadership, communication, and intercultural understanding. You also expand your social network and make new friends from all over the world!

Many veterans find that helping newbies is not only rewarding but also a great way to see their own country through fresh eyes. By explaining local customs and traditions to someone from a different culture, you often gain a deeper appreciation of your own background.

Building lasting connections

One of the most valuable aspects of the DEGIS Buddy Program is the potential to build lasting connections. The relationships formed through the program often go beyond your first semester in Germany and lead to lifelong friendships. These connections can be particularly meaningful as you navigate your academic journey, and they provide a support network that can help you succeed both during your studies and beyond.

How to join the DEGIS Buddy Program

Joining the DEGIS Buddy Program is simple. Once you’ve been accepted to a German university, you can sign up for the program through the DEGIS website. After you’ve registered, you’ll be matched with a buddy based on your preferences and needs. From there, the program provides ongoing support throughout the semester to ensure that both you and your buddy have a positive experience.

The DEGIS Buddy Program is structured to ensure meaningful and supportive interactions. Here’s a step-by-step overview of how it works:

  1. Application process: Visit the DEGIS website and navigate to the Buddy Program Page to find the application form, or use this link. Applications are open until September 9th, 23:59 CEST.
  2. Matching: After the application deadline, the DEGIS team will match newbies and veterans based on their cities to ensure geographical compatibility.
  3. Activities and engagement: For six months, you and your buddy will participate in various activities together. These activities are designed to foster a strong connection and provide practical support.
  4. Monthly check-ins: To ensure the program’s success, we will conduct monthly surveys where buddies can upload pictures of their activities together. This helps us track engagement and provide any necessary support.

What are you waiting for?

Starting your studies in Germany is an exciting chapter in your life, but it doesn’t have to be daunting. With the support of the DEGIS Buddy Program, you can feel confident and well-prepared as you embark on this new journey. The program offers more than just practical assistance—it provides a sense of community, belonging, and the opportunity to make lasting friendships. We are proud to partner with DEGIS to offer this invaluable resource to international students. Embrace the experience, make the most of the program, and enjoy every moment of your time in Germany!
