A large university town in a scenic hilly region

Aalen is located in the state of Baden-Württemberg between Ulm and Stuttgart. It is the largest town in the Ostalbkreis district and in the Ostwürttemberg region, and it's the second-largest in the Government Region of Stuttgart. Situated in the foothills of the Swabian Jura mountains, Aalen has excellent natural surroundings to explore.

Aalen has a total population of approximately 67,700 of which 17.8% are international residents. Aalen University of Applied Sciences is the only university in Aalen and has a student population of around 5,700. Around 34,700 of Aalen residents work and 12,000 of these workers commute to other areas for their job.

The Aalen University of Applied Sciences tailors its degree programs to meet the needs of the local job market. As one of the most research-intensive universities in the country, Aalen has conducted several studies on new energy concepts, IT security and biomedicine. The university has been ranked first in economics and third in mechanical engineering in Germany.

A large proportion of workers commute from Aalen for their job. Nearby Stuttgart is one of the main areas of employment. In Aalen itself, the creative and cultural industries are being developed.
